Indonesia. The head of Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency, Budi Waseso, has proposed to build an island prison guarded by crocodiles for the country’s death-row drug convicts. The crocodiles would be the primary measure of security for the new prison. “You can’t bribe crocodiles,” Waseso said. He also stated that he would be willing to travel the country’s archipelago in search of the “fiercest reptiles” to ensure they were apt to guard the prison. Neither a location nor opening date has been reported as the agency is still in its early planning stages for the structure.

New Zealand. Conservationists have expressed concern over reports that show the number of endangered yellow-eyed penguins has decreased. Out of 6,000 to 7,000 penguins, only 160 breeding pairs have been spotted this year, a 25-year low. The New Zealand native bird has faced many challenges, including outbreaks of avian diphtheria, starvation and an increase in attacks from barracudas. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation will collaborate with penguin conservation groups in hosting more beach patrols to protect breeding penguins.
