My name is Xiomara Pedraza and I am the current chapter president of Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority. Our chapter is having a Halloween club event at Minx Lounge on October 28th and we wanted to take this time to tell the Oxy community about our upcoming event and tell you all a little more about ourselves and the work we do.
Our chapter was established in 2004 and since then we have grown to 28 members, and 10 current amazing undergraduates. This event at Minx will be our first big party fundraiser. As a historically Latina-based and multicultural sorority we welcome women of all backgrounds including cultural and socio-economic. Our chapter dues are the lowest on campus per semester to insure that it is affordable for all who are committed to our principals.
Although we would like to keep our costs accessible, it has been difficult for us to raise enough for our programming. This fundraiser will help us raise money in order to put on programming that will spread cultural awareness, breast cancer awareness, facilitate educational workshops, and have our annual Easter Egg Hunt for children in the community and families of Oxy students (this event won the Community Service Event of the Year Award at Oxy). In the past programming has been difficult to finance on top of our other financial obligations to National Head Quarters and for our mandatory annual retreats and conventions. That being said, we are so excited about our upcoming Halloween Bash, not only because it’s a great fundraising idea, but also because we know that the Oxy community will really enjoy a great party off campus at a tasteful venue.
We understand that it is sometimes hard to get off campus and enjoy what the surrounding community has to offer, but this is a perfect opportunity to have fun with Oxy students, other young people from colleges and Universities around the Los Angeles Area and the surrounding community. The “Halloween Bash” will be Thursday October 28th from 9PM to 2AM at Minx located at 300 Harvey Drive, Glendale, CA (right off of Colorado Blvd and only 5-7 minutes from campus. This party is 18 and over and those of us who are 21 will have the pleasure of ordering a variety drinks. The sisters of SLG are also aware that safety is a priority which is why security will be provided and Bengal bus shuttles will be running to and from the event. Just wait at the fountain to be picked up. Tickets are on sale at $10 until October 25th, $15 after Oct. 25th and $20 at the door. There will be a costume competition with cash prizes for first second and third place. ASOC will also be cosponsoring the event. We are also trying to get a professional photographer so dress to impress and you may find your photo on Facebook.
We hope to make this an annual event to raise money for charities and provide good fun for Oxy students. Tickets are being sold as we speak every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the Quad during lunch. We can also deliver tickets for your convenience. Just contact the numbers on the fliers all over campus.
