After a tumultuous season riddled with disappointment, the men’s water polo team is preparing to enter the SCIAC championships at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps starting Nov. 13.The road to SCIAC was a long one, and started with a 11-5 loss to Claremont-M.S. at the 2009 SCIAC opener in early Oct.

Just a day later, at the team’s last non-conference game of the season, the Tigers lost to Chapman with a devastating score of 16-3 and dropped down to a 5-12 overall record.

The Tigers, led by an unrelenting offense, refused to let their recent downfalls affect their morale. The team’s decided victory over the Caltech Beavers, 17-3, improved both the overall season record and brought the Tigers up to 1-1 SCIAC record.

In the team’s third home game since the season opened in September, the Tigers suffered a homecoming weekend loss to Pomona-Pitzer as the Sagehens won by the skin of their teeth, 15-13.

The next two games, both played at Oxy’s Taylor Pool, proved to be just as inconsistent and wavy as the first part of the season. In one week the Tigers took down the La Verne Leopards in an 12-9 victory and then lost a close game to the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen, 15-13. The back-to-back SCIAC play left the Tigers at a 2-3 conference record after Halloween weekend.

The men’s water polo team will face-off with the University of Redlands Bulldogs in SCIAC today at Redlands. The Tigers will also battle the Whittier Poets in their last regular season game on Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. in Taylor Pool.
