Over the past several years, La Encina has struggled to become a comprehensive representation of a year in the life at Oxy. However, we are continually criticized for insufficient coverage of the student body. We have listened to the students’ feedback and we are taking steps to remedy the concerns. We have increased our event coverage by hiring additional photographers and staff members. Unfortunately, without the involvement of the student body, our best efforts will still fail to meet the students’ expectations.
During the past two weeks, our staff has been working to complete the book and has contacted over one hundred student leaders through personal and club addressed emails. The response to this huge effort has been minimal. We believe that it is unfair to expect our nine person staff to fully cover the entire student body, including over one hundred clubs, without their involvement. However, to those clubs who have emailed us promptly and responsibly, we thank you and appreciate your involvement. We guarantee your representation in the book, and your club will be remembered for years to come.
Unfortunately, the current unresponsiveness from the student body is not an isolated incident. Many of our other student outreach attempts have been greeted with apathy and even animosity. We still hope that we will be able to include as many aspects of our community as possible into this historical document. We cannot possibly meet student expectations if the students themselves do not become involved with this valuable student service.
We hope that the current widely held impression of the yearbook as a superficial picture book will be replaced by the notion of the book as a tangible piece of truly representative Occidental history. We ask you, the students of Occidental, to step up and own this book. Please send us pictures and information, not only when we ask for them, but whenever there is a moment worthy of publication. We do not guarantee ALL pictures will make it into the book, however it gives us the opportunity to better serve you and create a product that you are proud of. We are here to work WITH students as well as for them. We do not just work for ourselves but we work for the students of Occidental.
