After deliberations between students and faculty, Occidental College’s Dean Search Committee formally released a job description in the Chronicle of Higher Education on October 1. The College announced it is officially screening candidates for the new Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The Chronicle of Higher education describes itself as “the No. 1 source of news, information, and jobs for college and university faculty members and administrators” on its webpage, and is published daily online as well as once a week in print.

Although the position has been officially listed, Dean Search Chair Professor Robert Ellis says students shouldn’t be expecting a new Dean to appear on campus any time soon. “We will begin interviewing in a few months, and we anticipate that candidates will be invited to campus in late February or early March,” he said in an email.

According to the job listing, the Dean Search Committee is seeking applicants that “have the capacity for intellectual leadership of the liberal arts, a deep understanding that diversity is inseparable from excellence, and a working style that is honest and collaborative.” The new Dean will be expected to act as the Chief Academic Officer and serve in the absence of President Prager.

The September 19 issue of the Weekly reported that during an open Dean Search question and answer meeting held on September 7, students expressed their desire for a Dean who “values equity and is well rounded.”
