This is in response to Aliza Goldsmith’s letter to the editor last week. Goldsmith claims that the Film Department “were never asked to move their comps.” I suggest Goldsmith establish a clearer line of communication with Programming Board in the future. Programming Board, one of the sponsors for Senior Film Comps and the concert, politely, but strongly advised us to change our date three weeks before the screening.

This exemplifies the exact point Michael Darling tried to convey in his article “OSL Hip-Hop Concert Conflicts with Film Comps.” It is direct evidence of the extremely poor communication between departments and organizations on campus.

When this concert was planned, why did no one contact Master Calendar to see if there were any conflicting events? Why was the Film Department notified so late? It seems apparent that the all parties involved did not consider that the night was the same as Senior Film Comps and were reluctant to admit their blatant disregard for the event after the fact. All it would have taken was a little forethought and research. I recommend all parties involved exercise both in the future.

Furthermore, there are a few inconsistencies and inaccuracies with Goldsmith’s argument that Film Comps should not have rescheduled since “Hair” did not. First off, “Hair” holds performances on multiple nights for multiple weekends, while Film Comps is only ONE night. This is due to the incredible cost of renting Thorne Hall that the Film Department must fund. There is also the matter of family and crew members who planned to attend the event from out of town, but, due to the date change, were no longer able to attend.

On another note, on behalf of the Film & Media Studies Department, I’d like to thank everyone who was able to come to Senior Film Comps on Saturday. I hope you enjoyed the show!
