In light of issues raised during the Integrating Oxy event and in response to student concerns brought before the ASOC Senate we would take this opportunity to speak on our own behalf.

First, we would like to reassure the campus that all ASOC Senate meetings are always open to every student. Senate meetings are held at 10 PM on Tuesdays in Fowler 111 should anyone like to attend. A full record of every meeting, in the form of minutes, is posted on the ASOC website and also available to everyone. Further, all of the ASOC’s financial records are available to any student upon request.

ASOC Senate firmly believes that we are able to represent the diverse constituencies that compose the college community without necessarily sharing in every aspect of their life experience. We recognize the importance of constantly evaluating and challenging our college’s commitment to diversity. Senate takes concerns surrounding this topic very seriously and are actively continuing to engage in direct dialogue with students. This dialogue should rightly focus on, but not be limited to, the composition of our student leadership bodies within ASOC and without. Senate has demonstrated that it values cultural programming and the organizations that dedicate themselves to hosting these programs. Self-identified cultural clubs organize some of the most popular, widely recognized, impactful, and heavily attended events on campus. As a reflection of this student interest, these events consistently receive a high level of ASOC Senate funding. Additionally, outside evaluation in the form of a recent Honor Board ruling validated Senate’s level of funding of cultural programming.

ASOC Senate is an elected body. Every student is equally eligible to run for, vote for, and hold elected office. ASOC Senate believes that financial need should not determine any student’s ability to participate. To this end, the ASOC Access Fund provides scholarships to make elected office accessible to as many students as possible. However, many ASOC positions are uncontested and voter participation is usually well below half of the student body. We encourage you to voice your opinion through participation in ASOC elections.

ASOC Senate prides itself on its openness and availability to students. If any student ever has concerns or questions we hope that you will contact an ASOC Senator or the ASOC President to set up a meeting. A list of ASOC Senate’s membership is available on the ASOC website. We are always happy to explain our actions or clarify any aspect of ASOC governance. Senate can serve you best when we are aware of the issues that are of greatest concern.
