Now that elections are over and ASOC Senate has had a training retreat, we are ready to get the year going in full-swing. I hope that over the next few months, we, the student body, will work together to hold our administrators accountable to the mission of our college – a mission that emphasizes a commitment to providing a “total educational experience of the highest quality.”

My goal is to make student government more accessible for students to voice concerns and to learn how to navigate the college system in order to get things done. For the liberal arts program to thrive, student commitment and participation is essential. An active student body means a concerned and passionate one. And this ensures a higher level of democracy and engagement.

That being said, I must express appreciation of the fact that at Occidental, we have access to the Deans, the President, and have student representatives sitting on the Board of Trustees. To increase communication between, I will be holding open hours in the ASOC office (1st floor of the Johnson Student Center-between the Weekly and NPP offices) on Mondays and Wednesday between 2:45 and 4 PM. Please come by if you have any projects you’d like to discuss or voice any concerns about ASOC or the school in general.

This is a year of much turnover, and we need to use this to our advantage. Now is not a time to sit quietly and allow important decisions to be made. We must do research, ask why these decisions are being made, and give alternate scenarios of how we would like to see things done. Even though it may not seem like it, we have a great deal of resources at our disposal, and it’s time that we work together to get stuff done.

Amazing things have come of our peers-the Green Bean, the F.E.A.S.T. garden, Catalyst, and this is only the beginning. So don’t hesitate to contact me (agoldsmith@oxy.edu), contact a senator, come to one of our Senate meetings, ask the General Assembly co-chairs to host a meeting on A topic of your choice, apply to serve on the Board of Trustees, the Dean’s Advisory Board, the Institutional Planning Committees — just let your voice be heard. I look forward to hearing from you all, working together, and having a fun, productive year.
