While I was completely thrilled to discover that The Oxy Weekly was actually willing to acknowledge Veteran’s Day, despite the fact that essentially none of the rest of the campus did, I was rather appalled that Oxy’s by far most important Veteran Alum was left out of the story. Lt Col F. Brooke Nihart ’40 wrote the code of conduct for the United States Military. He single-handedly wrote the amazing code by which all men and women in the armed forces live today. It is THAT code that kept POWs in Vietnam from revealing secrets. It is THAT code that has saved hundreds of thousands of lives of both fighting men and women alike. Of all of Oxy’s alumni, Lt Col Nihart should have been included. I would ask that next time more thorough research is done. Lt Col Nihart truly deserves to be remembered at Oxy for how he changed the U.S. military. His contributions should not simply be forgotten.
