I just wanted to send a quick shout-out to the CGE, VFE, QSA, the ICC, and anyone else involved in putting on last week’s dialogue “Speak Up, Speak Out.” There has been so much discussion in the wake of the recent events and the response by administrators. It was refreshing to be sitting in a room with so many of my peers and so many staff members who are truly concerned about the nature of our community and who cared enough to come our for a couple hours and talk about how to address these concerns.

Being in that room though, I wondered where everyone else was-where was the outrage? I heard complaints and concerns from so many people the week prior, and then the night of this event, none of these students were anywhere to be found. We can’t only talk the talk, but we must walk the walk! It was really moving to see so many people wearing purple today in remembrance, but simply wearing purple isn’t doing enough. As a small community, we must look out for the well-being of one another, and hold each other accountable.

I encourage more members of the community to step up and attend more events such as this one. If we complain and don’t do anything proactive to address our concerns, we’re only giving the administration reason to doubt us. If you’d like to talk more, please feel free to email me at agoldsmith@oxy.edu. I am happy to figure out how senate can be more supportive in future events such as this one.
