“A Day in the Life” Photo Series: Noa Richard

308

A Day in the Life is a new photo series where individual photographers from The Occidental’s Media Team can showcase their typical school day during the Covid-19 pandemic. Many Oxy students now attend college remotely, either from their childhood homes or in quarantined living spaces with friends. The shift from a public college life to now eating, sleeping and studying in a confined space has been a change that many are learning to cope with. This photo series offers a look into how students are making their at-home lives exciting and how they find peace in the simple things. This series also provides the opportunity to meet the photographers who make The Occidental so great.

Noa Richard, a junior and photo editor at The Occidental, starts off the series from her home in Miami, FL. Below she narrates a typical day.

9:00 AM – Now that I am living on the east coast (3 hours ahead of L.A.), I can wake up later and enjoy my mornings before I jump into classes and homework. Right after I awake, I try to start my day with a quick meditation, to set an intention and be present before I plug into emails and social media. This morning, I succeeded in remembering to meditate and decided to snap a quick shot. Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental

9:30 AM- This is my bedroom (of course after I clean it make it look photo-ready). I take pride in this space since I have been quarantined here since March and felt motivated to re-organize and re-decorate it to my liking. I recently bought some plants that I take care of as if they were my children and put together a new nightstand from IKEA. I have learned that constructing furniture is one of my strange addictions. 9:30 AM- Time to water my plants! Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental

9:45 AM- Once my plants are hydrated, it’s time to nourish myself. I am a big fan of cooking and it’s one of the things that has kept me sane during the quarantine. Here I am cracking an egg! Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental

9:45 AM- Today for breakfast, I will be cooking eggs with avocado and tomato. I tend to add avocado and tomato to almost every meal, which is a very typical Chilean thing of me to do. Reminds me of my grandmother’s dishes back in Santiago, Chile. Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental

9:45 AM- Voila! The final product. Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental

10:00 AM- As I eat breakfast, my mom reads the Miami Herald paper. I don’t know anyone who reads as much as my mom does; she will never be caught without some form of reading material. Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental

10:30 AM- But alas, my slow-paced morning must come to an end. Back to my desk I go, finishing up some assignments and readings for my classes this afternoon. Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental

12:30 PM- I decide to take a quick break from studying to get some fresh air. One of my favorite ways to decompress from being indoors all day is to go bike riding! This is one of my favorite bike trails, 10 min from my apartment. It also happens to be right next to Miami’s main body of water, Biscayne Bay. Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. 12:30 PM- I stopped by the water to snap some shots since it was the most beautiful day! A tip:if you ever visit Miami, the best months to go are October-January. Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental

12:30 PM- I feel very grateful to live in a city with such great access to the outdoors and the waterfront. Spending time in nature always helps me put everything in perspective and allows me to find moments of stillness. Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental

12:30 PM- Ok, so I just couldn’t resist dipping my toes in! The water was so refreshing. Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental

1:30 PM- Back to work! I am attending a virtual lecture for my “Intro to Cognitive Science” class while I get a quick bite in. Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental

7:00 PM- I didn’t bother snapping a shot of my second class of the day, but found this sunset quite noteworthy. I happen to live on the 27th floor of a high-rise in downtown Miami and seeing a sky like this outside my window never ceases to amaze me. Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental

9:00 PM- Now that I am finally done with the day, I decompress with a newfound guilty pleasure.. Anime! I have two brothers who are obsessed with this Japanese manga show called Hunter x Hunter. Since we have been quarantined together, it has also become a part of my routine to finish the day with an episode or two. Miami, FL, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Noa Richard/The Occidental
