The sound of Spanish music could be heard booming and the sounds of students cheering along to some of their favorite songs at Oxy Spice on Saturday night.

There was non-stop dancing and the energy was endless. The culture of the night was tangible as Samuelson Pavilion was decorated with the flags of Spanish speaking countries to accompany the music of these nations.

“The dance was created to cater to the Latino/a population on campus,” Jasmine Tovar (junior), chair of MECha*ALAS, said.  ”Most Oxy sponsored dances play main stream music, but Oxy Spice plays traditional and mainstream Spanish music.”

While the turn-out was not equivalent to a dance such as Toga or Glow, the hosts of Oxy Spice enjoy having it at a more intimate setting.

“Given the crowd, it’s a better space,” Tracy Garcia (junior), SABOR president, said. “Most of the people (who attend) are Latino or are interested in Spanish music.”

Students dressed to the nines and truly got into the atmosphere of the dance. The students were much more enthusiastic and the liveliness was greater than that of most student-attended popular dances.

“I think Oxy Spice was fun and I enjoyed it because it is the only dance where Spanish music is played,” Cecilia Miranda (sophomore) said.

While this event was more heavily female populate, there were still males and females coupling off to dance the true salsa. There was even a couple professionally dancing, as a crowd gathered around to watch.

SABOR and MEChA*ALAS sponsor Oxy Spice annually. SABOR is a club on campus that gathers the Latino community. They play music, cook food and are a resource for incoming freshmen who need help finding their way. MEChA*ALAS is a club to provide political awareness and to discuss issues for the Latino population on campus.

“SABOR and MEChA*ALAS provide space for students to form a community, while Oxy Spice provides a space for students to destress and have fun,” Garcia said.
