As most Oxy students must have noticed, there has been a lot of anti-oxy sentiment around campus recently. Students are upset with Occidental, understandably, because the programming board has done a terrible job this year, they’ve done away with Sex on the Beach, room draw was awful, the administration’s plans to expand enrollment while also requiring students to live on campus for at least three years do not seem to fit with the number of dorms in existence, res-life gave two dorms (chilcott and newcomb) in very desirable locations to freshman while many sophomores didn’t even get rooms at all, the administration has been cracking down on partying and alcohol use, forcing students to venture farther and farther off-campus and into potentially dangerous situations, encouraging drunk driving, straining the relationship between students and campus safety, and basically ruining everything for everyone.

However, as a first-year student who came wide-eyed to Occidental College this year with the highest of expectations and affection for my new home, I think it is important that we focus on the thing that Occidental has done right, the little thing about our lovely campus that brightens our days and dispels all thoughts of transferring to USC or Whittier or Redlands. That’s right, I think you know what I’m talking about. The new bright neon green hot drink cup lids at the marketplace! These charming little lids light up my day! They are so colorful and happy that I can’t help but sport a smile as I walk (past dorms that will soon belong to the darling ickle first-years) up the steep incline to my AC-less dormitory on upper campus, carrying my cup of Earl Grey tea. So all of you complainers, next time your thinking about how much better our school could be, I urge you to fix yourself a warm beverage with a happy lid. Kudos to The Marketplace staff for providing shining ray of light, a beacon of hope in our dreary, uneventful on-campus lives!
