On Friday, Oct. 17, the Intercultural Community Center (ICC) kicked off the new school year with its annual Taste of Oxy event. Students gathered to eat a variety of cross-cultural foods, listen to student singers and musicians and celebrate the ICC. A wide range of foods such as Latin, Pan—Asian and Southern homestyle were spread across Thorne Patio, giving Oxy students a sampling of the ethnic diversities of the student body.
Local restaurants and food arenas—Colombos, Dave’s, Jerry’s, Los Tacos, Organic to Go, Panang, Taco Spot, Thai Spirit, Trader Joe’s, Senor Fish and Spitz—sponsored and donated food for the event. Students volunteered to serve the food and the Audio Visual team worked to set up the stage.
Performances included opera singer Noelle Pangilinan (first-year), the Folk and Historical Dance Troupe, singer Ana Vasquez (sophomore), rapper Daniel Badal (sophomore), and musicians Mandla Gobledale (junior) and Noah Tovares (sophomore). Doug Locke (junior) performed a song and dance number which ended with an exhibition of a flaming guitar. The show ended with a word from the ICC thanking students and related Oxy clubs and organizations.
In the past, the ICC has served as an educational resource at Oxy and has spread diversity, social awareness and community values across campus. According to Oxy’s Web site, previous events sponsored by the ICC have included Black History Month, Coming Out Week, White Ribbon Week, among others.
On Oct. 27 ICC will be kicking off the Fall 2008 Topics in Culture Series at 12:30 in Weingart 101 with “Race and the Study Abroad Experience,” an event co-sponsored by the International Programs Office.
