Michele Uhlfelder, the Occidental women’s lacrosse coach, was named the 2012 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Association (IWLCA) West Region Coach of the Year last Tuesday. Her most significant accomplishment so far has been building the team, which she started just three years ago from scratch, into a proven competitor. Last spring, Uhlfelder was at the helm of a squad that finished 13-4 overall and earned a trip to its first SCIAC Championship game and its first NCAA Division III playoff berth. While the program as a whole got off to a rather pedestrian start, winning a cumulative eight games in its first two seasons, the Tigers roared back in 2012. The black and orange went on a 10-game winning streak that lasted nearly 60 days. Their successful campaign finally came to an end in the first round of the NCAA playoffs, as the team lost a 15-14 nail biter to the SCIAC-rival Redlands Bulldogs. Despite the loss, the Tigers finished the season ranked No. 2 in the West Region and solidified itself as a team with national aspirations. With a young roster last year that lacked the presence of a single senior, Occidental will return plenty of experience in 2013 with six All-SCIAC picks and one IWLCA All-West Region selection for Uhlfelder’s fourth year as head coach.
