Dear Editor,

Let me begin by saying that I realize that Oxy prides itself on being a beautiful campus. With its sprawling lawns and immaculately tended flower beds, it really is the “urban oasis” that various college guides describe it as. However, I have a bone to pick with the maintenance staff. I cannot understand why it is necessary to use those deafening and very un-green leaf-blowers simply to blow leaves and debris from one place to another. I miss the satisfying crunch of stepping on a leaf, and now that it is officially Autumn, I think we should all be reveling in the season.

If it really is imperative for the college to pile up and dispose of leaves (a questionable practice, since decaying leaves nurture the soil and the very trees from which they fall), perhaps they could try not to do so at the ungodly hour of 8 a.m. when many sleep-deprived students are attempting to squeeze in that last hour of rest.

I do want to point out that while I may complain about noisy leaf-blowers outside my window, this does not mean that I fail to appreciate the hard work of the maintenance staff. They should be commended for tirelessly working to keep Oxy lookin’ good.
