I thought Riley Hooper’s article “Get With The Program” in last week’s Weekly was quite well done, especially in summarizing the issues the PB has faced from the inside and the resulting issues and conflicts that have arisen with the student body as a result. However, I think that a number of factors are at play that were not mentioned, or perhaps just not enough. With the crackdown of off-campus parties, the lack of on-campus events has become more noticeable, which not only draws attention to the PB’s hardships, but further exacerbates the student body because people literally find themselves bored on a Friday or Saturday night.

As far as dances go, yes, a reggae themed dance is a pretty terrible idea. Especially when the music being played is hip-hop and the speakers blow out. A basic adjustment is improving the themes of dances. Whether its cartoon themed, pokemon themed, or jersey themed, just make them better.

However, I think a possible assumption that is being overlooked by the PB is that everything the programming board does has to be huge, magnificent, and bumpin’. I think a clear example of a relaxed and easygoing campus event was the baseball team’s screening of a movie on the baseball field. It was simple and seemed to be pretty successful. Last year movies were screened much more frequently either in front of the cooler or in Johnson. Hopefully something can be learned from that. It’s possible that the student body wouldn’t mind further showings of movies, perhaps publicized more effectively and with atmospheric compliments such as popcorn or other minor things. There are plenty of events that could occur that are not huge and require an extensive amount of energy and resources.
