On Wednesday, Feb. 27, the Senate met to discuss the Senate Discretionary Fund and the Charter of the Renewable Energy and Sustainability Committee.

The meeting began with discussion surrounding the Environmental Charter and how committee members would be chosen. Senior Class Senator Ken Smutney explained that the General Assembly will be involved in the process, although they will not be part of the entire process. “[It would be] too cumbersome to be the GA Process all the way through,” he said. As Smutney explained, the GA will need to approve the selection process and the candidates. Smutney moved to pass the Charter. The move passed with the majority vote.

The Senate then approved funding requests with ASOC President Ryan Bowen (senior) reminding Senate they should expect some large funding requests later in the semester. “There are still some major funding requests coming,” he said.

The Senate approved funding for the DWA publication Global Perspective at $1,017. Bowen noted that the Senate was funding more than the DWA department was, even though the publication comes out of the DWA Department. “We’re funding $300 more than their primary academic department,” he said. “That’s a problem.”

The Senate commented on their discretionary funds, saying they are running low, but has enough in Club Allocation to make it through the semester.

The meeting ended with talk of trying to institutionalize funding for clubs that aim at problems of retention among students of color.
