Last week, Project SAFE, an organization that, according to their website, “provides resources, advocacy, and educational programming related to issues of sexual assault,” held Love Your Body Week on campus. Featured during the week was Love Your Body Day, which took place on Wednesday. Oct. 15.The event was put on to promote self-confidence among Oxy students, according to Britt Karp, a Program Assistant for Project SAFE. The Politics Department and Remsen Bird showed the film Look Us in the Eye: The Old Woman’s Project (2006) and the Athletics and Campus Safety Departments held a self-defense class.

On Wednesday, the quad housed the events of Love Your Body Day. There were free massages and an activity entitled “Love Your Friend Grams” in which students could send compliments and Sour Patch Kids candy to their friends and classmates. The week was created in an effort to give students fun ways to not only learn about Project SAFE, but also to become more self-aware.

Kelsey Longmuir (sophomore), a volunteer from the Center for Gender Equity (CGE), where Project SAFE is housed, said, “I think students responded really positively to Love Your Body Day, especially the love your friend grams. It was a really good opportunity for the Oxy community to let their friends know how special they are.”

“Project SAFE is about creating an open, safe and supportive environment to approach issues surrounding sexual assault,” Karp said. “Our intent with Love Your Body Day is to contribute to that atmosphere by empowering students, strengthening our community and allowing the campus to get to know us as a useful resource!”

Project SAFE will be holding similar events throughout the school year in an attempt to spread their cause.
