I am writing in regards to the lack of newspapers on campus. Last year we could count on receiving the daily Los Angeles Times and New York Times in our dorms. However, this service has been discontinued. The ending of this program could not have been because of lack of use. I recall that last year all of the day’s newspapers would typically be gone by one o’clock in the afternoon. I have spoken with people about the sudden discontinuation of the papers and they too would like to know why this service has ceased.

The daily news was a much appreciated service here at Oxy that was ended without any announcement or consultation with the student body. At least when there was discussion about doing away with the in room phones there was a General Assembly meeting about the possible removal.

It’s hard to get a subscription to the L. A. Times at Oxy. Scratch that, it’s easy to get a Times subscription, it’s just impossible to actually recieve the paper you bought. But that’s something for another time. I’m just surprised that Oxy wants to get students prepared “. . . for leadership in an increasing complex, interdependent and pluralistic world,” but at the same time the school cuts us off from a daily window into said world. I don’t think I’m asking for much. I only want to be able to read the daily news and find out what’s going on in the world, and if not that, then I wouldn’t mind if some of our tuition costs were shaved off to make up for the decline in services.
