Fall break has come and gone, and many fall sports are winding down. Having played 15 out of 17 games, the men’s soccer team is nearing the season’s end.

Unfortunately, due to a lackluster season, the team can no longer reach post-season even if they win their remaining games.

As of Saturday, Oct. 24, the men’s soccer team has a win-loss record of 4-11 and a conference record of 3-9. This leaves them seventh in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings (SCIAC).

Daniel Watson (first-year) reflected on one of the team’s most memorable games. “After losing a number of games, we played La Verne,” he said. “We played well and we won. It felt good.”

The last two games against Pomona-Pitzer and Caltech ended negatively for them. On Oct. 21, Pomona-Pitzer beat Oxy 1-0 and on Oct. 24, Oxy was beaten 2-1 by Caltech.

However, the team is optimistic about its chances at improving its overall SCIAC standing. Because the team consists mainly of first-years, sophomores and juniors, many of its players will continue to play next year. They are getting along well and looking forward to next year, despite this season’s outcome.

Fans, too, are still staying positive about the team improving its current standing.

“The team is solid in the back but needs help in the offense,” said Alex Broad (first-year).

Other supporters feel that the men’s soccer team needs to optimize its talent by looking to the student body for new recruits.

“They need to advertise the team better to gain more players and fans,” said fan Joe Dingman (first-year).

Watson agreed that the team needs a better student-body fan base. “We would love to have more fans,” he said.

Spectators expressed that they would like to see more student support at the games.

“More people need to come to the soccer games and support the team,” said Dingman, adding “The games would also be better if played at Patterson field more often.”With the high-pressure end of season in full swing, the team must stay energetic in its attempt to bring its best to the field.

The men’s soccer team will play against Claremont-Mudd-Scrips today at Claremont. The last regular season game will be held at Oxy on Saturday, Oct. 31 against the Whittier Poets.
