The 2007 Occidental College ASOC Election for First-Year Senators and Honor Board Jurors ended this past Friday, September 14. The election lasted approximately two weeks.
A few days before voting was scheduled to begin, ASOC noticed that there were no students in the running for the two Senate positions, which were open to first-year students. In order to generate interest among students, senate members visited the Residence Halls during hall spreads and gave students more information about joining the election.
Campaigning for the election began September 8 and lasted until September 13. Most of the candidates, however, did not begin putting up flyers until the end of the week. Flyers showing support for the candidates could be seen throughout the campus, as the candidates used colorful posters and images to attract the attention of the student body.
Voting was conducted online over two days and the winners were announced to the campus via e-mail on Friday, September 14.
Students could view each of the candidates’ platforms on ASOC’s Election Candidates website throughout the election. Honor Board Juror candidate Danielle Siegler (first-year) drew on her unique position. “As the only first-year candidate for Honor Board, I hope to bring a fresh perspective,” Siegler said on her online platform. As a first-year Senator, my main focus is to help the student body.”
According to an e-mail sent to the campus from Assistant Director of Student Life Kenna Cottrill, 706 people voted in the election.
The ASOC website reported that 1383 total votes were cast for the Honor Board Juror candidates. Each student was able to vote for a maximum of three candidates.
Nick Lee (sophomore), Danielle Siegler (first-year) and Debbie Afar (sophomore) won the Honor Board Election with 32.9 percent, 25.8 percent and 24.3 percent of the votes, respectively.
Voting for First Year Class Senators was only open to first years. 581 votes were cast for the eight candidates who ran for the two open slots. Winners Xochiltl Ramos and Tilak Gupta received the highest percentages with 26.2 percent and 15.7 percent, respectively.
