Despite their rocky start in previous years, Occidental’s men’s lacrosse team is counting on new talent, coaching and strategic game approaches to make it to playoffs this year.

Two years ago the program almost ended as a result of too few team members and no coaching staff. However, the program has since rebounded, and the Tigers are on their way to a successful new season.

New players who have joined lacrosse in the last two years are largely credited with the program’s rejuvenation. “This year there are more players, including freshmen who have strong lacrosse backgrounds,” Wes Goodman-Levy (junior) said.

A dedicated coaching staff has also helped promote team growth. The coaches have been especially successful at developing the players’ skills and helping them trust one another more. “Coach Steve Luna has brought a lot to the table. He has a wealth of experience  and knows how to teach each position, so he helps players become better in their respective roles,” Goodman-Levy said.

Coach Vasquez and Coach Keist ‘09 have also earned the players’ trust and respect.

Player Michael Berman (junior) credits the coaches with the team’s unity. “We’ve really come together as a team on and off the field, which has translated into success during practice, but more importantly during games,” he said.

The team had a chance to display their new skills when they played Pepperdine University, a perennial contender.

At halftime Occidental was ahead six to one. However, Pepperdine showed off their own talent as they scored three consecutive goals, so that the score was six to four, Occidental.

“At that point we were tired and a little deflated. They were gaining momentum and we were losing our intensity,” Goodman-Levy said.

Doug Calder (first-year) scored the most important goal of the match, at the precise moment when Occidental was playing sluggishly and Pepperdine was gaining momentum. With Calder’s goal, the Tigers stopped Pepperdine in its tracks and reenergized the team, allowing Occidental to hold off the rival school and win the game ten to six.

“It was a huge goal. It completely changed the game for us and for them. Calder came up big for us,” Goodman-Levy said.

Last year Occidental Lacrosse won one game out of twelve and lost to Pepperdine twenty-three to six. With the win on Saturday they have matched their win total of last year, and they still have eleven more games to play.

They face Cal State Long Beach next, ranked fourth in Division II club. However, the team is not intimidated. The win against Pepperdine gave the Tigers confidence and self-assurance.

“If improvement and learning continues, going to championships for club lacrosse is definitely attainable,” Goodman-Levy said.
