Samuel Stekol:
If it were possible to have Samuel Stekol (senior) on a fantasy football team, his 245 yards on 13 receptions and three touchdowns against La Verne on Saturday would have tallied a whopping 42.50 fantasy points.
Despite missing one of the Tigers’ three games so far this season, Stekol still ranks first in the SCIAC in both receptions per game (9.5) and total yards per game (186.5), and second in receiving yards (373) after his standout performance at Ortmayer Stadium.
Stekol attributed much of his success on Saturday to the performance of starting QB Bryan Scott (sophomore).
“Bryan and I were on the same page. We had a good groove going,” Stekol said. “When that’s happening you feel like you can score on any play. I would definitely say that we were both in the zone.”
Stekol took advantage of the Leopards’ man coverage, burning the cornerback for a 45-yard reception and a 35-yard touchdown. Defensive back and team co-captain Teran Mawhinney compared Stekol’s ability to that of National Football League superstar Calvin Johnson.
“He’s like the Division III Megatron in that he’s big, he’s strong and he’s fast. When you have that trifecta it’s just tough to cover,” Mawhinney said. “There’s not a single corner in the league who can cover him.”
Dallas Gunny:
Women’s soccer goalkeeper Dallas Gunny (first-year) made eight saves against Cal Lutheran on Saturday night, but it took only one dive to the left for her to lead the Tigers into overtime.
In the 88th minute, with the score tied 2–2, a handball in the 18-yard box forced a Regals penalty kick.
“Everyone went silent. I started freaking out,” Gunny said. “I could tell that the shooter was nervous too. It looked like she was going to go to my left, so I kind of guessed, but I had a really good feeling she was going to go to my left.”
Gunny’s save under high pressure allowed the Tigers to fight through the rest of regulation and two overtimes. The team eventually lost 3–2, but Gunny’s effort was not forgotten. While the save was one of the most memorable in this season so far, it is not out of the ordinary for Gunny.
“Dallas has been very consistent from the start of the season and has made several outstanding full stretch saves, and none more dramatic than her penalty save Saturday night,” McFeely said via email. “She has a great attitude, works hard at her game and pushes herself to get better.”
