Revenue from specialty drinks funds student groups

The Green Bean recently changed its policy regarding the appropriation of funds generated by the sale of specialty drinks. Previously, proceeds from the three specialty drinks all went to scholarship funds. Now, proceeds from sales of the monthly rotating specialty drink To Veitch Their Own will be allocated to various campus organizations.

The Diversity and Equity Board (DEB), a newly formed branch of the Associated Students of Occidental College, is the current recipient of the funds, according to Programming and Customer Experience Manager Theophilus Savini (senior).

DEB currently does not have any other source of funding, according to Savini.

“We evaluated organizations based on how much money they had and what their need was,” Savini said. “It seemed fit that [DEB] would be the organization that the drink of the month would go to.”

Beginning next spring, recipients of the funds from the To Veitch Their Own drink will be determined through an application process. Groups will be able to apply for funding either for their organization or for a specific event that they are planning. One group will be chosen per semester by a committee made up of the Green Bean’s student managers, faculty adviser and supervisor.

Any Occidental student, including Green Bean employees, will be able to submit applications on behalf of organizations that they are involved in. Selection will be based entirely on the application process. Applications for spring semester funding will be due Jan. 1.

The proceeds from the Green Bean’s other speciality drinks — the Skotchaim and the Green Dynamite — will continue to support scholarship funds. While the drink’s names remained relatively similar, The Green Bean replaced the speciality beverages with more popular drink recipes last semester in an effort to make the drinks more popular, according to Sales Analysis Manager Eddy Perezic (junior).

The Skotchaim, named for former Occidental President Robert Skotheim, used to be a raspberry and blackberry mocha. Now it is a dirty chai — a chai latte with espresso.

The Green Dynamite recognizes the Green family, after whom the Green Bean itself was named. Previously a toffee nut/hazelnut latte, it is now, by student suggestion, a blended matcha drink.

“Green tea matcha was something that we rolled the dice on and people love it,” Perezic said. “We’re really excited about that.”

To Veitch Their Own, named in honor of Jonathan Veitch, Occidental’s current president, was formerly a spicy hot chocolate known as Son of a Veitch. Reinvented as To Veitch Their Own, the drink now changes on a monthly basis. In October, it was a pumpkin spice latte. This month, according to Perezic, the drink of choice is apple cider.

Perezic said that groups that apply will be able to express preferences for what drinks will be offered as the To Veitch Their Own drink. However, the managers will have the final say since the drink has to be feasible to make.

“When we bring in a new recipe we have to make sure that every single one of our baristas knows how to make it, knows how to make it well and knows how to make it quickly,” Perezic said.

For each specialty drink sold, there is an upcharge of 75 cents for small drinks and $1 for large drinks that goes toward the designated fund for each drink.
