LAPD arrests suspect on Ridgeview Avenue

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers arrested a suspect with outstanding felony warrants on Ridgeview Avenue at approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 11. The suspect had warrants for burglary and failure to register as a sex offender, according to LAPD Officer James Zboravan.

Campus Safety officers blocked the Bird Road entrance to campus, near Newcomb Hall, 2–3 p.m. LAPD requested that Campus Safety block the entrance to help with traffic control, according to Campus Safety Sergeant Joseph Novak. Novak said the campus was never in any danger.

Jim Tranquada, director of communications and community relations, sent a campus-wide email at 2:05 p.m. alerting the Occidental community that LAPD had asked everyone to stay clear of Westdale Avenue, Ridgeview Avenue and the stretch of Campus Road between these two roads.

According to LAPD officer Jon Roman, an officer spotted the suspect on Ridgeview Avenue earlier this afternoon. LAPD established a perimeter around Campus Road’s intersections with Westdale Avenue and Ridgeview Avenue. The suspect initially ran from police for about 10 minutes, but then hid in a garage on Ridgeview Ave just blocks from campus. An LAPD K9 team approached the garage and ordered the suspect to come out. Roman said that the suspect complied and the officers arrested him.

Tranquada sent another email to all Occidental students, faculty, staff and administrators at 2:57 p.m. to alert the community that LAPD had arrested the suspect and that Westdale Avenue and Campus Road would be reopened shortly. He warned that LAPD expected Ridgeview Avenue to remain closed for another hour.

At the time of the arrest, 12 police cars were parked at the intersection of Campus Road and Ridgeview Avenue and an LAPD helicopter circled overhead, assisting in the search.
