On behalf of APIA, API Grad, BSA, Black Grad, CCC, First Nations, I Ka Poli O Hawai’i, J@XY, MEChA*ALAS, PUSO, Sabor, and SASA, we condemn the unfair allocation of cultural funding for Black History Month and Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month. We do not feel that ASOC is properly servicing the cultural organizations of Occidental College, and recent underfunding of our cultural programming has sent our communities the message that our events are not valued equally to others. While we recognize that the ASOC Senate is not a racially diverse entity, it is still obligated to uphold the Mission Statement of Occidental College by providing equal service and treatment for all students.

For ASOC to properly serve our communities, the following improvements must be made:

1. All members of senate must participate in a mandatory diversity/cultural sensitivity training.

2. The ASOC senate meetings must be recorded with an audio/visual device, minutes must be documented electronically, and dialogue and discussion between Senators must be transcribed so that the rationalization for allocating funds are clear. These minutes and recordings must be made available for the student body to obtain following each meeting.

3. Details of the money requested and granted to all ASOC-funded events must be made available for the entire student body to access in order to ensure maximum transparency.
