Didn’t get a chance to watch the Oscars? Then head over to Johnson 200 to observe another event with fame in the making: Occidental College’s Fifth Annual Film Festival. At 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. tonight in Johnson 200, multiple student films will be shown, followed by awards of first, second and third place announced by a panel of judges. The winning prizes vary, including passes to the Laemmle and ArcLight Theatres, DVD box sets and noise cancelling headphones.

Nine films were selected by a panel of students in the film department and on the basis of production value, story, length and genre. The panel attempted to choose films which were diverse both in subject matter and style. They also chose only one film per director in order to enhance the variety of films shown.

Miles Painter (sophomore) said that his film, Dependence Day-co-directed by Harry Walling (junior)-is centered on an attempt “to explore the perception of the American male as brutish, simple and stupid.”

“[We] wanted to comment on the single-mindedness with which American militants pursue goals on a global scale (the whole ‘get ‘er done’ thing),” Painter said. His perspective is just a sampling of the broad spectrum of themes present throughout all nine films.

Moana Casanova (senior), whose film Broken Beginnings will also be shown tonight, said the first showing will be finished in time for “THE COOL with Lupe Fiasco” concert benefit at Thorne Hall and works as a perfect way to get pumped for it.
