MediaDay in the LifeBy Isabel Liebgold - March 24, 202176ShareFacebook Twitter Email Print Isabel Liebgold is a sophomore photographer at The Occidental from Los Angeles, CA.8:00 AM: Waking up is a lot slower of a process now than it was when I actually had somewhere to physically be. Being in the same room day in and day out, I focus on the little things, like the way the eastern morning light pours through my bedroom window. Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.8:30 AM: The first thing I do when I get out of bed is make myself a cup of coffee. As the millennial saying goes, “Don’t talk to me until I’ve had my coffee.” I like the Kahlua mug because it makes me feel like “The Dude.” But instead of liquor, I take my coffee with unsweetened almond milk and stevia. Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.8:45 AM: I’ve been spending a lot of time on my balcony. I’ve been paying more attention than I’d like to admit to the seasonal changes of the plants and trees from my vantage point. I’m very happy with this succulent because it recently bloomed with beautiful yellow flowers. I was lucky to capture a bee who was enjoying it with me. Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.8:45 AM: Another favorite sight of mine from my balcony is my neighbor’s cats perched in their window. This is the black one, but they also have an orange one. Seldom do my father and I see them sharing the window sill. Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.9:10 AM: I shower (you don’t get to see that part, creep!), brush my teeth, sometimes do my makeup and get dressed. Dressing aesthetically well feels like a pretty pointless activity these days. Though, the pandemic has motivated me to color-coordinate my closet, which is very satisfying and highly recommended. Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.9:30 AM: Today I decided to take an at-home COVID test because I was a bit anxious that I was exposed. LA has been running a fantastic at-home testing system. It’s so unpleasant to shove that swab up my nose! It’ll be nice when that’s a thing of the past. And by the way, I tested negative. Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.10:00 AM: The bulk of my day is spent behind my computer, working on homework and going to classes. It’s monotonous in the sense that I do the exact same activities everyday: reading, writing, and going to meetings; the spontaneity of life has pretty much evaporated. But, my classes are extremely interesting and I’m learning a lot this semester. I have actually been really enjoying the academic portion of school, maybe more than I ever have. Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.11:30 AM: This is my desk light, where I sometimes catch my reflection during classes. I find it to be visually profound; it communicates the isolated fishbowl-feeling of quarantine well. Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.12:00 PM: This is the view through my window from my desk. I find myself staring out of this window a lot these days. Despite being from LA, I find that the palm trees never get old. Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.12:37 PM: For better or worse, TikTok has become a staple of my life since the pandemic. The hours I have lost and the miles that I have scrolled bother me, but the app reliably brings me much needed laughter. I periodically check it throughout the day when I need a mental break from school. It’s a hard and socially isolating time, so I try not to beat myself up too harshly over my social media addiction. Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.3:00 PM: Today, I did my dads and my laundry. He’s at work all day, so I try to help where I can. Luckily, nobody was using any of the machines! Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.5:00 PM: I went to my mom’s place this evening. My siblings live here, so I hung out with them too. I have been making an effort to spend a lot of quality time with my parents during the pandemic. This street is where I grew up, so though this photograph is visually ordinary, this view is home to me. Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.7:00 PM: For dinner, mother got us Ralph’s sushi. Ralph’s sushi is lowkey the best grocery store sushi! Nobody else likes sushi in that house besides us, so we had a nice mother-daughter dinner. Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.10:00 PM: My tolerance for surviving on little sleep has significantly decreased since COVID. Therefore, I usually go to bed at 10 or 11. I’d rather wake up early and do work than stay up late working. One of my little pandemic projects was taking the infamous dorm LED lights down from the ceiling and mounting them on my bed frame. It’s a lot less harsh to the eyes and a lot more sleek looking. Anyway, time to repeat this all over again tomorrow. Goodnight! Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. Isabel Liebgold/The Occidental.
