The Cast of the Vagina Monologues

We would like to thank Aidan Lewis for his article last week that engaged in dialogue since one of the primary goals of V-Week was to spark conversation about the vagina. Feminism is a difficult concept to define and we do not seek to claim one interpretation over others, only that it is the right of each woman and man to interpret feminism on an individual basis. That said, we understand that not everyone may agree with our interpretations.

We understand that our advertising was sometimes suggestive. One purpose of the advertisements was to replace negativity by reclaiming the vagina with positive imagery and discourse. The concept of the vagina is one that has long been oppressed and silenced through violence and misinformation. That is why the advertising advocated empowerment through vocalizing women’s thoughts, perspectives and opinions, including the right for women to have sexual satisfaction.

As our ads stated, the purpose of V-Week and the show itself was to “raise awareness of issues pertaining to women, sexuality, education, abuse, empowerment, and more.” This is why V-Week included a variety of events such as the Oxy Women of Power panel, a teach-in regarding violence in the Congo and much more.

Thank you again to all who came to our show to support us, and also all those who may not have come but are engaging in dialogue and expressing the multitude of opinions surrounding gender and sexuality.
