I just finished reading “Blyth Fund Attempts to Bolster Gender Equality During Selection Period” by Martha Carol (which was a matter definitely worth delving into – kudos to The Weekly’s ever-vigilant tradition of investigative reporting) and felt compelled to share a few thoughts on the subject as the recently graduated recruiting director responsible for this year’s gender-skewed Blyth Fund class.

It’s a shame I was never offered an interview for this “article” despite playing a non-trivial role in shaping its subject; I would have told Ms. Carol that while diversity of thought is certainly a key mission of the Blyth Fund, the term encompasses much more than a fixed gender distribution. Diversity adds value to a group entity by offering differing perspectives. These perspectives are shaped by a student’s life experience – their family, socioeconomic background, ethnicity, religion, and a plethora of other variables combine to give each Blyth candidate a unique paradigm to bring to the investing table.

To that end, the Blyth Fund has done an admirable job in honing their recruiting process to find the right mix of talent and diversity. Ms. Carol’s shallow one-year snapshot might show that the directors on the Blyth Fund look similar on the surface, but it doesn’t t get to what really matters – that the directors this year don’t think alike.
